NEW Marine art gallery
I have decided (ok I have actually been persuaded!) to host some scans of my own artwork here on this website. I work both in pencil and Oil on canvas, my subject matter is very much related to this website. Follow the link above, or in the top of the contents at the left of the page. Last updated 08/01/06.

1941 KM Schwere Kreuzer Prinz Eugen special feature
Ok so it's well past time for something new on this website; here are some shots of my 1/700 DKM Prinz Eugen model. This model represents 'Der Prinz' as per the Battle of Denmark straits which took place on 24/05/41. This page is really a test feature - if it generates enough interest then I shall add similar material from time to time (uploaded 06/10/2005)

MN Français Floréal FF Phototour
As promised, the page is now online. Contains photos of both MN Prairial and MN Vendemaire, taken in 2000 and 2001 during visits to Auckland, New Zealand. The Floréal class frigate is a 2,950ton surveillance/reconnaissance ship, armed with a CADAM Mod 1968 100mm gun, 2x Giat 20F2 20mm CIWS and 2x MM38 Exocet SSMs. The Floréals were, for a period of time, regular visitors to Auckland Harbour; MN Français frequently exercises with the Royal Australian and Royal New Zealand Navies. Please be paitent while the graphics load!

1143.4 Admiral Gorshkov to be transfered to India
The Indian navy has secured a deal with the Russian Navy for the purchase of the modified Kiev Class aircraft carrier capable missile cruiser(CVG) Admiral Sergei Gorshkov (ex Baku). The Indians have agreed to purchase her for the cost of her refit being around US\\$750 million. The CVG will be modified extensively with a 12 deg ski-jump so she will greately resemble the Admiral Kuznetsov. The transfer should take place sometime in the next 3~4 years. Gorshkov will replace the ageing CV INS Virraat (ex HMS Hermes).

Admiral Ushakov to be scrapped
The Russian 28000ton battlecruiser Admiral Ushakov (ex "Kirov"), former flagship of the Northern Fleet is now destined for the scrapyards. This news did come out months ago, but I thought I'd post my respects here being that I liked this ship so much. The name Admiral Ushakov has been recently transferred to a 965 Sovreminniy class destroyer, and apparrently the Russians are still trying to figure out how to dismantle a ship so big. The end of this ship marks the mournful end of a great era for the Russian Navy. This ship was truely a marvellous feat of naval engineering; at least the name "Ushakov" (who really was the Russian 'Nelson') will continue to live on in the Russian Navy. My silent respects.

Site New look
Yes you may have noticed the radical change to Fightingships.8m.com, this has been in the cards for some time, the site is undergoing major renovations. Please give me feedback in the Guestbook and to my email Addy. Thanks!!

US Navy building/converting SSGNs
The US Navy has recently began converting Ohio class SSBNs into submerged cruise missile platforms. Work on converting USS Ohio herself is currently underway. It appears that the objective of this programme is to have 4 SSGNs by 2010, capable of carrying 154 TLAM each. This move reflects a shift in US Naval strategy, from the immediately post cold-war blue-water fleet, and powerful nuclear deterrent, to a more littoral and brown-water force - that will probably be more suited to integrated deep strike and joint strike operations.

K141 Kursk. The tragedy, and the Salvage mission
Also one year ago now lies the tradgedy that consumed the lives of 118 Russian Submariners of the Type 849A PLARK K141 Kursk. The loss was a shock to the world that watched helplessly in those dark hours to follow. Now she has returned home to the port of Roslyakovo northern Russia. Salvage was performed by Salvage Firms Mammoet and Smit international. All but the front section of the ship has been salvaged.

China's failed deal with the Typhoon SSBNs
The PLAN has failed to secure a deal with the Russian navy to buy two of the six Typhoon class SSBNs. So the sole SSBN defence of China now lies in the single ageing Xia Class SSBN. Of the origional six 'Project 941' class missile boats, only two currently remain in active service with the Russian Navy; with one boat being used as a weapons test bed, and the other part of Russia's active nuclear deterrent. The four decommissioned boats, currently in a more deplorable state are destined to be scrapped in the United Kingdom and United States.
